Spring in Washington, DC is an absolute dream—bursting with color, light, and some of the most iconic floral backdrops in the country. Whether you’re drawn to the cotton-candy pink of saucer magnolias or the soft flutter of cherry blossoms, there’s a bloom (and a photo session!) for everyone. In this guide, I’m sharing the best bloom options for family photos in the DC area and linking to some of my favorite seasonal sessions so you can start planning your perfect spring shoot.
The pink saucer magnolias are the true early birds of DC spring. Blooming in late March, these giant pink petals create a magical, almost storybook feel for family sessions. They’re a great alternative if you’re looking to beat the cherry blossom crowds—and they photograph beautifully in soft morning light.
The most iconic of them all—Yoshino cherry blossoms! These delicate white-pink blooms line the Tidal Basin and other pockets around DC in early spring, usually peaking in late March to early April. If you’ve dreamed of those classic DC cherry blossom portraits, this is the bloom for you.
The Kwanzan cherry blossoms bloom a bit later—typically mid to late April—and are known for their rich, fluffy pink petals that pop dramatically on camera. These vibrant trees are a great option if you missed the Yoshinos or want something bold and beautiful for your spring session.
